Disclaimer
Although the STD template files have undergone testing by several experts, there is no guarantee that all their elements are error-free. They are supplied "as-is" without warranty of any kind, either expressed or implied. No liability is assumed by ISO for incidental or consequential damage resulting from their use.

These files were developed and tested using a number of word processors running under a number of operating systems (see "Use of the STD template" below for more information). However, there is no guarantee that they will function on all platforms and all types of software, in all language versions. Should these files not function on your system, ISO is under no obligation to provide a solution.

ISO makes no claim as to the absence of computer viruses in the delivered files or their support. As a result ISO recommends that all files and their support be checked by the end user for viruses.

Use of the STD template
The STD template is a wizard to be used with Microsoft Word 97, Microsoft Word 2000, Microsoft Word 2002 (XP) and Microsoft Word 2003 for the preparation of ISO and ISO/IEC International Standards, Technical Reports, International Standardized Profiles, Technical Specifications, Publicly Available Specifications and Guides. It automatically creates the cover sheet of these documents, their foreword, headers and footers, and inserts a style sheet to facilitate the creation of the rest of the document. It may also be used to prepare Amendments and Technical Corrigenda to these documents.

The STD template, version 2.1, is in conformity with the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2, 2004. It replaces STD 2.0 which was in conformity with the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 3, 1997. Additional changes are as follows: the "Insert" button of the STD toolbar was been renamed as the "Elements" button to avoid any confusion with the "Insert" menu of the standard toolbar; the styles Body Text, for use in tables, have been renamed as Table text; the gutter has been increased by 7 mm to give an inside margin of 25 mm.

The STD 2.1 template can be used with Microsoft Word 97, Word 2000, Word 2002 (XP) and Word 2003, under Windows 95 [OEM Service Release 2 (OSR2) recommended], Windows 98, Windows Me, Windows NT4.0 [Service Pack 3 (SP3) recommended], Windows 2000 or Windows XP. [For those people using the Japanese versions of Word and Windows, note that this version 2.1 works with Word 2000 (it has been tested under Word 2000 and Windows 98) but not with Word 97.] It has not been tested with other versions of Word or other operating systems. It cannot function in non-VBA (Visual Basic for Applications) environments. The minimum hardware configuration is a PC-compatible computer equipped with at least a 133 MHz Pentium-type processor, at least 10 Mbyte of hard disk space free, a colour screen compliant with SVGA standard (minimum resolution: 800 x 600) and at least 16 Mbyte RAM (24 Mbyte or 32 Mbyte recommended).

If you are using Word 97, to save correctly files to Word 6.0/95 format, it is necessary that the binary conversion filter to Word 6.0/95 format [converter delivered with Office 97 Service release 1 (SR-1), available from Microsoft Corporation] is installed; otherwise the files will be saved in RTF format.

A number of known problems affect the use of the template with Microsoft Word 2002 (XP) or Microsoft Word 2003; these problems are detailed in the reference manual.

Installation procedure
IMPORTANT — If you work on a network, do not perform the installation yourself; ask your network administrator.

The STD template has been adopted by certain standards bodies for the preparation of their national and regional standards. European users are advised to consult their member body or the CEN Management Centre for details of how their national or regional standardization systems respectively can be accessed.

The STD template has been designed to support the use of accented characters. Therefore your version of Windows must be configured to support the ISO 8859-1 character set (Latin 1) (see B.1.1 and B.1.2 in the Template reference manual).

The STD template is supplied as a compressed archive file (ZIP file) containing the following files:

STD.DOT Wizard (automated template)
STD.INI Configuration file
README.HTML Terms of use, English

To install the template, download the archive to a folder of your choice on the hard disk of your computer. In Word, find the locations specified for the "User" templates and "Workgroup" templates (in the "Tools" menu, choose "Options" and note the "Location" specified in the "File Locations" tab). Extract the file STD.DOT from the archive, and save it to one of these locations or to one of their subfolders (it may be preferable to create a new subfolder especially for the STD template). Extract the file STD.INI from the archive and save it in the Windows folder of your computer (usually C:\WINDOWS if you use Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows Me or Windows XP, or C:\WINNT if you use Windows NT or Windows 2000).

CAUTION — The template requires write access to the STD.INI file. Check that the Windows folder of your computer is not write-protected; if it is, contact your network administrator.

Submission of technical queries
Please include the following information when submitting a technical query.

  1. Make, version and language of word processor and operating system [e.g. Word 97 (English) on Windows NT4.0 (English)] used.
  2. Version of the STD template [the version number is displayed at the bottom of the second dialogue box of the STD manager (opened by clicking on the "Doc.Info" button)].
  3. Working context of the problem (e.g. "when opening a new document", "when applying style Subclause with title in an annex", etc.).
  4. Precise error message, if any (normally in standard Message box), or description of the incorrect behaviour.
  5. Critical level of the problem:

Basic troubleshooting
In the case of problems using the STD template, please verify the following before reporting the problems.

  1. Your Microsoft Word version is 97, 2000, 2002 (XP) or 2003.
  2. The STD.DOT file is in the folder specified for either the "User" or the "Workgroup" templates (or a subfolder thereof) and is not open.
  3. There is only one file named STD.DOT in the PC environment, i.e. the local and network drives to which the PC has access.
  4. The STD.INI file is in the Windows folder of your computer (usually C:\WINDOWS if you use Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows Me or Windows XP, or C:\WINNT if
  5. you use Windows NT or Windows 2000), and this folder is not write-protected.
You are using the correct template. (In the "Tools" menu, select "Templates and Add-ins…" to see if your document is actually based on the STD template.)
  6. No other Microsoft Word add-ins or global templates that may interfere with the STD template are currently loaded. (In the "Tools" menu, select "Templates and Add-ins…" and, if necessary, de-select the loaded items.)
  7. Your equipment conforms to the minimum requirements for the use of the STD template: see "Use of the STD template" above.
  8. Verify that the answer to your problem is not listed in the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ).
If you are using a Microsoft Word version in a language other than English or French, try if possible to use the STD template with an English version of Microsoft Word. If you find that the problem is resolved, the problem is probably related to the language version of Microsoft Word that you use. In this case, please submit a technical query indicating the Microsoft Word version and language concerned, and save a copy of the problematic document as Text Only [to show the erroneous field(s)]; then return to the document, display the field codes ("Tools" menu, "Options…", "View" tab, check the "Field codes" box) and save another copy of the document as Text Only. Send the two text files via e-mail or on diskette to the ISO/CS contact for technical queries specified below.
